The Beachcombers

Beach pirates ( Original title: The Beachcombers ) is a Canadian television series that ran from 1972 to 1990 in Canada, and to this day is the longest running produced for Canadian television television series. A total of 387 episodes were produced in Canada, of which 91 were dubbed and aired in Germany. which was broadcast on ZDF in Germany and the third since 1976.

Series overview

The series describes the life of Nick Adonidas, a Greek- Canadian tree trunk collector in British Columbia, whose job it is to the coast northwest of Vancouver along down to trace logs that are cut away from the rafts. He receives a reward. Its main competitor in this business is Relic, a somewhat sleazy type who occasionally travels great distances to thwart Nicks shops and to steal his trunks. The series also focuses on the supporting him people from Nick's hometown of Gibsons, often staying in the cafe Molly 's Reach, which is operated by Molly, a mother figure for virtually all actors on the show including Relic.

During the series, the stories became more complex, because the roles of the actors further developed. Many episodes focused on Nick's Greek heritage.

The title of the series was shortened in the final season to Beachcombers, where CBC stated that it was the intention to give the aging show a fresh new look. Repeated budget cuts in state-supported CBC meant, however, that the series - were sold - despite the fact that in Canada she was still popular and the series had been sold abroad.

The TV series offered a glimpse into Canada's multicultural population structure. Nick Adonidas was Greek, and Relic was Welsh descent. Other main characters were Nick's Indian business partner and friend Jim and Jesse RCMP Constable John Constable.

Davies and John were the only original cast members, which in the later television film The New Beachcombers, which was produced in 2002, participated. It should serve as a pilot for the planned revival of the series, but failed. At this time Gerussi, Clothier and Brown had already died. Another TV movie, A Beachcomber 's Christmas, was also produced. Once again the attempt failed to revive the series.

Film Locations

The television series was filmed at locations in Gibsons and the surrounding area. The café, which occurred in the series, Molly 's Reach exists today and is a local attraction. Ironically, Molly 's Reach was a cafe after the end of the series. It was a movie set and not a restaurant, while the series was filmed, and not accessible to the public. After the series was canceled, it stood empty for a while, its future was completely uncertain. Finally, private investments have been made to convert it into a functioning restaurant that was at the heart of Lower Gibsons.

International broadcasts

The series has been sold worldwide and was especially popular in the UK and PBS in the United States. It was also shown in Australia, New Zealand and Ireland. In Germany she was entitled beach pirates.
