The Bottom

The Bottom (originally Dutch. Botte ), official name or Leverock Leverock City, is the capital of and 9 October 2010 on the former Netherlands Antilles belonging Saba. Since October 10, 2010 Saba is a so-called " special municipality " of the Netherlands. At the last census in 2001 the town had 462 inhabitants. On the entire 13 km ² island of about 1,400 people live, the other three villages on the island are St. Johns, Windward Side and Zion Hill ( Hell's Gate).

The English name The Bottom (German: floor, lowest part ) is merely a corruption of the Dutch name, and in no way describes the location of the place, this is in fact inside the very mountainous small island, 220 meters above sea level, at the foot of extinct volcano Mount Scenery, the highest 877 meters mountain in the Netherlands.

Botte was founded in 1632 by colonists Zealand. Through settlement of Irish and Scottish sailors and pirates, as well as by African slaves was in the following centuries, English became the dominant language on Saba, which eventually led to the change of the place name.

In the village the administration building and the Governor's House are ( Gezaghebber ) for Saba. The old island administration had to be demolished in 1966 due to sponge infestation and until 1970 was replaced by a new building. A 19th century. The Bottom has three churches. The Anglican Christ Church from 1777 is the oldest surviving structure on the island. The Roman Catholic Sacred Heart Church (1877 ) and the Methodist Heiligungskirche (1919) are also among the historical monuments of the island.

Due to the isolated location of the island of Saba is dependent on support from outside. With the help of Dutch government agent named after the then Queen Wilhelmina in 1935 in The Bottom created, a small park with an octagonal bandstand, since a meeting of public life in the village. 1972 was created by Dutch and UN funds, a screen printing factory, 1986, the Saba University School of Medicine, a small medical school.

About three winding mountain roads The Bottom is the only port on the island (1.5 km south-west ), the beach Wells Bay (2 km north) and further east villages St. Johns ( 2 km) and Windward Side (3 miles) connected.
