The Cave of the Yellow Dog (Mongolian Шар нохойн там ) is a documentary feature film from the year 2005. Directed by the Mongolian Byambasuren Davaa, who with her previous film The Story of the Weeping Camel 2003 celebrated great successes.

Action

In the green expanse of Mongolia a family of five leading her tradition-conscious life far from civilization. She lives on sheep farming and in harmony with nature. Nansaa, the eldest daughter of the family, is looking for a dog dung, which she calls " Zochor " and takes her home. Her father wants her to expose the dog again. He fears that living in the area wolves could possibly smell the trace of the dog and so destroy the flock of the family. But Nansaa want to keep him under all circumstances. One day, she loses the dog herding sheep and thus strikes an old nomad who tells her the story of the Cave of the Yellow Dog.

The director Byambasuren Davaa transports the audience into a strange world and granted such deep insights into the Mongolian faith and in the daily life of a traditional Mongolian nomadic family. The family plays in the film itself, making a large authenticity is achieved.

The film was produced for 600,000 euros.

Its premiere the film on 12 May 2005 at the International Film Festival in Cannes, and came on 28 July 2005 in the German cinemas. Overall, the film had an audience of 234 914 in the German cinemas.

The film was the Mongolian Academy Contribution to 2006 Best Foreign Language Film category for, but was neither nominated nor excellent. At the award ceremony of the German Film Prize 2006 he won the award for Best Children 's and Youth Film.

On the Black Movie Festival de films des autres mondes in Belgium and on the Geneva Film Festival, the film won a Prix du Public ever. At the International Film Festival of Cannes 2005, the film won the Dog Award for the best representation of a dog in a movie. At the Hamptons International Film Festival was The Cave of the Yellow Dog in the categories of Best Cinematography, won Best Feature Film and Best Original Score. On the Bratislava International Film Festival 2005, the film won the Grand Prix for Best Film. On the Munich Film Festival 2005, he won the Audience Award. Also in 2005, Byambasuren Davaa received the Young German Cinema Award in Directing.
