The Crests

The Crests were an American doo-wop vocal group.

History

The original lineup was founded in the mid-50s in New York. The founding members were JT Carter, Harold Torres, Talmadge Gough and Patricia Vandross, the older sister of the later R & B artist Luther Vandross. JT was still the vocalist Johnny Mastrangelo (later Johnny Maestro) mainly contributed by his distinctive voice to the success of Crests. At this time, Patricia Vandross had already left the group, allegedly because she was too young to make concert tours. 1957, the quartet got a record contract with Joyce Records and released the first song Sweetest One / My Juanita ). From 1958 the group to Coed Records and joined the hits follow: Sixteen Candles became a bestseller.

The success of Crests lasted until 1960. Then the lead singer Johnny Maestro left the group in order to try as a soloist. The singer James Ancrum replaced him. With him the Crests had a moderate success with the song Little Miracles again. However, this single reached without prejudice to the previous song as the first top 100. Talmadge Gough hereafter left the group and was replaced by Gary Lewis ( Gary Lewis of Gary Lewis & The Playboys ). After the group broke up. Johnny Maestro in 1969 still a million seller as a singer of the band Brooklyn Bridge.

In 2004, the group was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. Johnny Maestro died on March 24, 2010 due to cancer.
