Dreams in the Witch House ( The Dreams in the Witch House ) is a short story by HP Lovecraft. It first appeared in 1933 in the July issue of the pulp magazine Weird Tales.

The student Walter Gilman relates a decayed roof room in a legendary house. In the witch craze of the late 17th century is there Keziah Mason, a woman who was accused of witchcraft, have experimented with changes in the space-time continuum, until she disappeared without a trace.

Gilman increasingly neglected his studies, he only deals with occult books and his confused dreams. On the other hand, he suddenly shows amazing knowledge of astrophysics and philosophizes about space curvatures as well as the contacts with non- Indian residents of other, far more remote regions of the galaxy. Again and again he imagines himself in his dreams in surreal landscapes in which he met the old witch who strives Gilman imagine the black man Azathoth. Gilman knows this character from the legendary Necronomicon and questioned more and more of his mental health as he is drawn by an inexplicable power to a certain point in the night star sky. It turns out soon that his dreams are not a manifestation of his tense state of mind or illusions, because his roommate told him of a purple light shining in his room. It is the same that surrounds the old witch in his dreams.

Henceforth his life is determined by wild fantasies fever, sleepwalking and the perception of strange noises. He fantasizes of an alien landscape and barrel-shaped creatures. Gilman is close to madness when he found the statue of such a barrel being in his room the next morning. The properties of the object beyond description, it definitely seems not to originate from this world. The infernal anguish eventually lead to the young man's death.
