The Esquires

The Esquires was an American rhythm and blues band from Milwaukee.

Band History

The R & B band The Esquires was founded in 1957 in Milwaukee by Gilbert, Alvis and Betty Moorer, as the three siblings still attended school. They appeared first on in local shows. In the course of the existence of other members joined the band, so Harvey Scales ( not participated in the recordings) and 1961 Sam Pace. First, they were given the opportunity to participate as a background singer for recordings of Lonnie Walker. Betty Moorer then took a few singles under his own name; she left on the tape to try a career as a soloist. It was replaced by Shawn Taylor. In 1966 the group recorded as The Esquires and now worked primarily in Chicago. More pictures were taken then for Bunky Records; Get On Up / Listen to Me ( Bunky 7750 ), written by Gilbert Moorer, was released in early 1967 and became first a local, then a national hit. The song was at # 3 of the R & B charts and reached # 11 on the pop charts; it was followed by appearances in Chiacogher Regal Theatre and the Apollo Theater in New York.

The second single And Get Away / Everybody's Laughing ( Bunky 7752 ), which was again written by Gilbert Moorer, was released in October 1967 and was again nationally successful; it reached # 9 R & B and # 22 on the pop charts. Then appeared the only album of the band, followed by other singles extractions in 1968, but no longer able to build on the success of 1967. The group ended the contract with Bunky Records and signed a contract with Scepter Records. Although the single Scepter single was released in the catalog ( Scepter 12232 ), You've Got the Power / No Doubt About It, however, remained unpublished. It then appeared on the Scepter sublabel wall. After three singles, the contract with Scepter 1969 After reshuffles appeared in the early 1970s, further singles on labels such as B & G and Lamarr, but only 1976 managed The Esquires a renewed chart success with a newly recorded version of their first hits. ; Get On Up '76 / Disco ( Ju - Par 104) was the last title success of the ensemble.
