History

The previous group was Masterettes and consisted of Brenda Reid, Carol Johnson, Lillian Walker, and Sylvia Wilbur. When Herbert Rooney ( b. 1941 ) in their sister group rausflog Masters, he joined in 1962 as a replacement for the Wilbur Masterettes to. These named themselves after into Exciters. Rooney was 4 years older than the other three members of the quartet, because Brenda Reid, Carol Johnson and Lillian Walker were all born in 1945.

Fairly quickly got the four a recording contract with United Artists and recorded the repetitive Tell Him ( United Artists 544 ), which should be their only major success. In England, Billie Davis in 1963 with the song successfully. Other cover versions there are, for example, of Alma Cogan (1963 ), Hello ( 1974), The Glitter Band (1974 ), Kenny Loggins ( 1988) or Vonda Shepard (1998). A French version by Claude François was published in 1963 under the title "Dis - lui ", a Spanish ( " Dile " ) also in 1963 by the singer Rosalia.

After their hit Tell Him the Exciters 1963-1966 still had several placements in the U.S. Top 100, but always remained in the lower half of the charts. Their hits between 1962 and 1964 were produced by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller and released on United Artists Records, including the title Do- Wah - Diddy ( United Artists 662), who came to the U.S. charts in 1964 to 78th place. The end of 1964, Manfred Mann and the song had so a number -one hit in the U.S. and in the UK.

At the beginning of 1965, the group moved to Roulette Records, was there, however, with the single I Want You To Be My Boy a modest chart success. The title was an answer song to the hit song by Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers I Want You To Be My Girl.

Beginning of 1966 the group changed again the record company and signed a contract with Bang Records, but her single A Little Bit Of Soap ( Bang 515) only reached number 58 of the singles charts.
