The Jayhawks

The Jayhawks are an American alternative country band.

Biography

The band was found in 1985 in Minnesota. The founding members were Mark Olson ( acoustic guitar and vocals), Gary Louris ( electric guitar and vocals), Marc Perlman (bass) and Thad Spencer (drums). Their self-titled debut album was released in 1986. More popularity they reached with Blue Earth in 1987. At this time the music was written by Olson very strong influences from Roots Rock and Country.

On their 1992 album Hollywood Town Hall, which was recorded primarily in the Pachyderm Recording Studio, located Louris involved much more in the creation of the songs. The album was very successful and is now considered one of the classic albums of the alternative country. The band toured extensively and recorded the album Tomorrow The Green Grass ( 1995) on. The production was very expensive and the heels of the plate fell short of expectations. Among the well-known pieces of the album "Miss Williams ' Guitar " is one ( a love song to Olson's former mistress and current wife, the musician Victoria Williams).

1995 Olson left the band to spend more time with Williams. They later formed the band Original Harmony Ridge Creekdippers. The Jayhawks took on further, but did not play more the folk - songs and rootsorientierteren Olson. In Sound of Lies ( 1997) wrote almost all the songs Louris. The effect of straight-line skirt in ironic " Big Star ", psychedelia, acoustic elements, for example in the title track and even some Dubelemente were mixed, while the country - orientation of the beginning faded into the background.

Smile ( 2000), produced by Bob Ezrin, was more of a pop album, what some of the old fans did not like. In the New York Times, the album was well discussed, but the newspaper played with the caption, heading, that the band remained largely unnoticed: "What if you made a classic and no one cared? " ( "How to make a classic, and it no one is interested ?") The song " I'm Gonna Make You Love Me " was used for a Ralph Lauren advertising and also in the movie All Over the Guy ( 2001).

Rainy Day Music (2003), which so far last album of the band was again produced little and acoustically as. Within the songs " Tailspin, " " Stumbling Through the Dark, " " You Look So Young " ) Stephen McCarthy, a former member of the Long Ryders joined the band and played pedal steel, lap steel and banjo on the album as well as electric guitar at live shows.

Olson and Louris toured in 2005 as "From the Jayhawks: . An Evening with Mark Olson & Gary Louris, Together Again "
