Band History

The Living End was founded in 1994 after the singer and guitarist Chris Cheney and bassist Scott Owen were introduced to each of their older siblings at the Wheelers Hill Secondary College in Melbourne. Cheney was obsessed with 80s rockabilly group the Stray Cats. Owen decided to learn bass instead of piano and already they began performances under the name "Runaway Boys" how to play the eponymous album by Stray Cats. The band had a number of drummers until they agreed on Joe Piripitzi.

The Living End had their first major success in 1995, after a T-shirt and a demo tape to Billie Joe Armstrong (with its label Adeline Records are since 2006) had sent. They got a place as a support act at the next Green Day tour of Australia. After the tour, the band went into the studio. There they produced their debut EP Hellbound which received moderate support from the radio stations.

In November 1995, the band went back into the studio. This time they produced their second EP It's for Your Own Good which they released seven months later. The Song From Here On In was played by many radio stations. Soon after the release of the second EP left drummer Joe Piritzi the band and was replaced by Travis Dempsey, who soon also played with the band at major festivals such as Pushover or Falls Festival. After they toured one years by Australia, the band decided to go back into the studio to play something new on their now very popular shows. The result was the double single Prisoner of Society / Second Solution. The inspiration for their new song The Living End won at a recent Australian punk band, which is known as the "Filling The Void".

Breakthrough

Prisoner of Society quickly became a national hit. The band signed a recording contract with the company "Modular Recordings" for their debut album to be published, which carries the band's name. Single and Album conquered the Australian charts for months. The Living End is the best selling rock album in Australian music history and has received up to now five times platinum. The album Roll On, which was released in 2000 was a little more creative, but it did not reach the success of the first album. Cheney later stated that he wanted to prove to the critics that The Living End not just a band is defined by their hit Prisoner of Society. The album showed this by combined it with other styles of their previous fast paced rockabilly music. The Living End were compared for the album by some critics with The Clash, who had their breakthrough with London Calling. In the course of the album release, they played again at major festivals in Europe and North America. In the autumn of the same year Chris Cheney was in a car accident on the Great Ocean Road, which the band had to take a year off. When it came to the accident, he was on his way to a friend who plays in the Australian band Bodyjar.

In 2003, after Chris 's condition had improved, Andy Strachan took over the position as drummer, because Travis Dempsey long tours was too tiring. In this new lineup released The Living End singles One Said To The Other and Who's Gonna Save Us? . This was followed by a great tour and the release of their third studio album, MODERN ARTillery.
