The Love Bug is an American comedy film from 1968 with the miracle -VW Beetle Herbie as the main character.
Action
The unsuccessful race car driver Jim Douglas learns in a car business not only its owner Thorndyke and his secretary Carole, but also know a VW Beetle, which is obviously equipped with a life of its own. As the wondrous companions Jim follows also follow them home, Jim buys the car. First, he helps Jim and Carole for a date.
Jim directs the Beetle, which by Jim's friend Tennessee ( called Teddy ) the name gets Herbie, restores and drives the car back race victories. As Thorndyke Herbie plans to buy back unsuccessful, Jim leaves on a race with Herbie as a use. For this and the next few races to go Jim and Herbie victorious.
For a Date by Jim and Carole the frustrated Thorndyke Herbies engine manipulated with Irish Coffee; now the following race at Riverside Herbie suffers an engine failure, Thorndyke wins the race.
Carole announces at Thorndyke and joins Jim, Herbie and teddy on. The cocky become Jim buys for the upcoming races of El Dorado a Lamborghini; as Jim Herbie also wants to sell it to Thorndyke, Herbie smashed the Lamborghini and flees; Thorndyke, the Herbie wants necessarily be looking for his people after the VW Beetle. An attempt to disassemble Herbie to explore his secret, fails, as Herbie hiding in an Asian pageant. Jim may just keep you from having to throw from the Golden Gate Bridge Herbie. During his escape Herbie damaged a shop, which is why its seizure is imminent. However, Jim and Teddy agree with the shopkeeper and entrepreneur Mr. Wu that if Jim wins the race of El Dorado, Mr. Wu gets the prize money and Jim Herbie may keep.
Mr. Wu makes a bet with Thorndyke on the outcome of the race with Herbie as an insert. When, after the first day of the race, the prospects for Jim and his friends look bad and Thorndyke insists on his ownership of Herbie, Herbie but regains its energy and drives Thorndyke to flight. Since Herbie the race now but still wins, takes over Mr. Wu Thorndyke's auto business. Thorndyke and his assistant oat straw have to work as a mechanic for Mr. Wu; Jim and Carole marry.

In the same year the film finished the Laurel Award second place in the category of Best Comedy; Dean Jones was nominated for Best Lead Actor in a Comedy.
Continuations
The film was followed by three sequels and a remake: 1973 Herbie was great in motion, three years later, the great beetle in the Monte Carlo Rally was shot and finally was with Herbie rotates by 1980, the third and final installment staged. 1997 was a television film titled The Love Bug returns. In 2005, with Herbie: Fully Loaded - The Love Bug launches produced by a remake.
Between 1971 and 1979, a multi-part movie series of the VW Beetle Dudu was produced in the FRG, whose model is the series of films about Herbie.
