The very first published in November 1965 song, California Dreamin ', was a great success and was the prelude to a series of hits, including Monday, Monday, Go Where You Wanna Go and Dedicated to the One I Love. John and Michelle Phillips had already written the piece in 1963, when they lived in New York, inspired by Michelle Phillips' homesickness, she moved to California. The group broke new ground by combined women's and men's voices for the first time. With its floating sound, pop and folk combined, and the lyrical words they expressed more than any other band the lifestyle of the former flower-power movement. Her life prescribed the band members this lifestyle.

As John Phillips learned of the affair between his wife Michelle, and Denny Doherty, he threw it on June 28, 1966 by the band and Jill Gibson was hired as a replacement. Just two months later, Phillips picked the end of August his wife back in the band, and Gibson received a severance.

In the summer of 1971, the members who worked on their solo careers in the interim found, once again for the last album, People Like Us, together, which was not successful, however. End of July 1974 Cass Elliot died of a heart attack.
