Also in 1963 married the band members Elliot and Hendricks. The music of the Mugwumps can be characterized as a folk -based pop music. An early 1964 single released by Warner Brothers Records was unsuccessful. In August 1964, the material was recorded for an album that was not released because the group disbanded shortly afterwards. Only against the background of the later successes of the members of the Mugwumps, the album was released in 1967.

End of 1964, Elliot and Doherty joined with John Phillips and Michelle Gilliam along to the group The New Journeymen which renamed itself in 1965 in The Mamas and the Papas.

James "Jim" Hendricks made a career as a songwriter and country singer, for example, he wrote the hit for Johnny Rivers Summer Rain and took over fifty albums of folk and country music.

The group Mugwumps was only a short time, but was the breeding ground for two successful bands: 1965 founded Sebastian and Yanovsky The Lovin ' Spoonful, while Phillips, Elliot and Doherty achieved worldwide success with the Mamas & Papas.

The music historical significance of the Mugwumps is that traditional folk singer from the Greenwich Village through their approach to pop music attempted commercialization and thus a broader impact of folk music. The two resulting from the Mugwumps folk-rock groups Lovin ' Spoonful and the Mamas & Papas path to the popularization and commercialization of folk music has been consistently trod.
