Biography

The songwriter Geoff Stephens in 1966 wrote the song Winchester Cathedral, where it was about a teenager who was abandoned in the cathedral of Winchester from his girlfriend. He played a song with studio musicians and brought it out as a single of The New Vaudeville Band. As lead singer John Carter is usually given with the Geoff Stephens had written the hit My World Fell Down for the band Sagittarius producer Gary Usher. According to other sources, it was, however, Bobby Dean (actually John Smith). According to a third source, the journalists Frank Laufenberg and Juliet Edenhofer, Geoff Stephens, however, sings itself ("so the whole thing would just as he has imagined "). The song became a million seller. In the U.S., sold within just 6 weeks 1.5 million copies of the single and the song took three weeks 1st place among the music charts.

Due to the surprising success Geoff Stephens had put together a band with whom he could go on tour. From the stage musicians was drummer Henri Harrison during the recording of the single case; as a singer Alan Klein was hired as the Tristram - Seventh Earl Of Cricklewood was presented. This should listen to in America "very British " and so the time of the British Invasion increase the market value of the band. She strutted on stage in original clothing from the 20s and 1930s, around and behaved like bored, aristocratic snobs.

The song Winchester Cathedral was awarded the 1967 Grammy for best contemporary rock and roll recording. By 1970 there were over 400 cover versions of the song, among others, Frank Zappa.
