The Nutcracker

The Nutcracker (Russian Щелкунчик, Schtschelkuntschik ) is a ballet in two acts by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

Formation

The Nutcracker and the Mouse King story was written by ETA Hoffmann. Alexandre Dumas ' version of the story was later set to music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and one of the most popular ballets. It is used by many theaters and opera houses regularly - usually around Christmas time around - listed and appeals to children and adults alike. The composer was inspired to this work by a play that had his brother Modest wrote for his sister's children. Tchaikovsky told Marius Petipa of this family theater, who then wrote a libretto. The work was performed on December 18, 1892 for the first time in the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg in the choreography by Lev Ivanov and equipment by the opera director Ivan Vsevolozhsky, less than a year before Tchaikovsky's death.

Content

The focus of the ballet is Klara, in the original Russian Masha. She gets a present from her godfather Drosselmeyer a nutcracker on Christmas Eve. When she lies down, she falls asleep and dreams of a battle cited by nutcracker toy soldiers against the army of the mouse king. With their help, the Nutcracker triumphs which then turns into a prince. The prince is traveling with Clare in the realm of sweets. It goes through the pine forest to the castle Zuckerburg, where there resided the Sugar Plum Fairy in honor of their guests held a feast.

The Nutcracker Suite

Derived from the ballet suites were very popular. There are different versions of these suites in which order and used rates vary, including a version of Tchaikovsky himself (op. 71a). One version was used in Walt Disney's Fantasia.

  • A Soviet cartoon from 1973, entitled Щелкунчик ( " Schtschelkuntschik " - " The Nutcracker" ) uses the music of the ballet piece as accompaniment to the otherwise wordless action.
  • The computer-animated American film Barbie and the Nutcracker 2001 (Lions Gate Films ) and the Canadian animated film The Nutcracker Prince (74 minutes of playing time ) work, the suite also included in their action.
