The Queen of Spades (Russian: Пиковая дама, Pikowaja dama) is an opera in three acts and seven scenes by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky to a libretto of his younger brother Modest Tchaikovsky, based on the short story of the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin. The opera was taken on December 19, 1890 Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg for the premiere.

Action

Act I

Hermann meets the beloved of him, Lisa, who is, however, engaged to the prince Jeletzky. He wants the grandmother Lisa wrest the secret of how to win every game of cards. The grandmother was formerly called because of their passion for gambling Pique Dame.

Second Act

At a masked ball Hermann von Lisa gets the key to the room of the Countess, Lisa's grandmother. He should come to her through this room.
