The Royal Scam is the fifth album by Steely Dan. It was released in May 1976.

The album was certified gold and reached number 15 on the charts. The album is relatively Guitar oriented, it played Larry Carlton, Denny Dias, Elliott Randall, Walter Becker and Dean Parks.

In a BBC interview in 2000, said Becker and Fagen that the title Kid Charlemagne by Owsley Stanley was affected.

Record sleeve

The album cover shows a sleeping on a bench in a suit under skyscrapers with animal heads. The cover was designed by Larry Zox. In the liner notes of the album remasters from 1999 Fagen and Becker described the album cover " the ugliest album cover of the seventies, with the possible exception of Can not Buy a Thrill ".

Reception

The Rolling Stone gave in his Hall of Fame the album the maximum score.
