The Scarlet Pimpernel (musical)

The Scarlet Pimpernel is a musical based on the novel by Emmuska Orczy ( the German translation as The Scarlet Pimpernel published ). The music is by Frank Wildhorn ( Jekyll & Hyde ), lyrics by Nan Knighton. The premiere took place on 9 November 1997 at the Minskoff Theatre in New York. Since 2008, the musical will also be performed by the Takarazuka Revue, with a similar huge success as the Takarazuka interpretation of the Viennese musical Elisabeth.

Action

The musical takes place in 1792 during the French Revolution. Despite all the political turmoil of the English noblemen Percy Blakeney has fallen in love Paris in the French dancer Marguerite St. Just and marries her after only a few weeks acquaintance. What he does not know: it was set by the jealous Paris police chief Chauvelin under pressure to reveal the hiding place of the French nobleman Marquis de St. Cyr. A short time later, this is beheaded with all his family.

Percy learns of Marguerites a supposed betrayal and loses his confidence in them. He decides to fight secretly against the cruelty of the revolutionary government. Together with his friends, he saves as a masked Scarlet Pimpernel numerous people from the guillotine, while he gives the aristocratic snob in England to deflect any suspicion from himself. Police Chief Chauvelin increases with increasing severity and escalation of hate in the search in until the Counterparty to stand in the shadow of the guillotine for decisive duel.

Venues

At the premiere on 9 November 1997 at the Minskoff Theatre in New York Peter Hunt directed.

The German -language premiere was held at the Halle Opera House on 14 February 2003. The German texts by Wolfgang Adenberg, directed by Robert Herzl, Koen Schoots was the musical director.

The world's first open-air production of The Scarlet Pimernel took place in the summer of 2003 on the Clingenburg in Klingenberg am Main. Directed by Artistic Director Udo Schürmer, the conductor was Jürgen Voigt, sound engineer was Pit Lenz.
