The Shelton Brothers

The Shelton Brothers were an American country music and old-time duo that was one of the most popular hillbilly duo during the 1930s.

Life

Childhood and youth

Born as Bob Attlesey ( born July 4, 1909) and Joe Attlesey (* January 27, 1911 ) in Riley Springs, Texas, the two brothers began to learn early instruments. During the 1920s, the early years of the Country, they heard Peg Moreland and Jimmie Rodgers, who recorded great success in 1928. Together Bob and Joe began to appear as a duo and subjected only to Longview, then to Tyler.

Career

In Tyler, the two brothers had been found in Leon Chappelear a musical partner and took along with him on 4 and 5 August 1933 for RCA Victor's Chicago sublabel Bluebird Records as Lone Star Cowboys their first seven plays. The Deep Elm Blues is probably the best known song from this period. The Traditional, they should build later several more times and developed in the course of their career into a kind of " signature tune ". In addition, the trio Jimmie Davis accompanied at various RCA sessions. After moving to New Orleans, they were taken from the new label Decca Records. Decca suggested, however, to use a more commercial name; therefore the Bruderduo in The Shelton Brothers called around; it was the maiden name of her mother. In New Orleans, they also found at various radio stations work, what their reputation positively influenced.

In Decca, the brothers experienced their most successful phase. During the 1930s brother bands were very popular and the Shelton Brothers advanced addition to the Carlisle Brothers (Bill and Cliff ), the Monroe Brothers and the Blue Sky Boys as one of the most successful groups of country music. Some of their songs were I'm Sitting On Top Of The World, Match Box Blues and Just Because, which was later covered by Elvis Presley. Overall, the two 150 tracks for Decca played one. In her later recordings they were supported by their younger Brude Merle, Curley Fox and Gene Sullivan. Besides her work as a studio musician and radio, the Shelton Brothers took also toured extensively through the United States.

During the 1940s, their sales were after, but on the radio they remained sought-after guests and kept upright by their success. The WFAA Saturday Night Shindig gave the Shelton Brothers opportunity for performances in front of audiences. 1946, the Group was next to Joe, Merle and Bob Shelton from Preacher Harkness, Joe Molina and Bernie Harkness. A year later, the brothers signed a contract with King Records, but was none of their singles to build on the previous successes. End of the 1940s broke the Shelton Brothers apart. Bob and Joe went for a few years from now on together at the Louisiana Hayride. Bob Shelton occurred during the 1950s in various Texas Barn Dance Shows on ( Red River Jamboree and East Texas Hillbilly Jamboree ).

Joe died in 1980, his brother Bob followed in 1983 and Merle Shelton died a short time later.

Although the Shelton Brothers were one of the most successful hillbilly bands in the second half of the 1930s, they were later forgotten. Your recordings are difficult to find today, as there is little CD compilations of the two brothers.
