The Spaniels

The Spaniels were a doo-wop band, which celebrated its greatest success in the 1950s. Best known they were by their R & B # 5 hit Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight.

The band was founded in late 1952 in Gary (Indiana), as Warren, Jackson, Courtney and Gregory, the Roosevelt High School visited together, decided to form a band. Finally, they were able to convince James " Pookie " Hudson to join in and acted as Pookie Hudson & the Hudsonaires on a talent show their school.

A little later, the band named in The Spaniels to, got a recording contract with the then completely unknown label Vee Jay Records and eventually moved to Chicago. Middle of 1953 then took the five singers on Baby It's You, which cracked the Top 10 of the R & B charts in September. The following year, the band had with Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight then their greatest success. The song took a 5th place in the R & B charts, a cover version of the white pop band The McGuire Sisters came in the top 10 of the pop charts only a little later.

Meanwhile, the Spaniels were regularly at New York's Apollo Theater and toured parts of the United States. You Painted Picture came in the fall then to # 13 of the R & B charts. A little later, Courtney had to go to the military, he was replaced by James " Dimples " Cochran. Even Warren was drafted and after two more singles flopped returned the Spaniels also Hudson and Jackson of the band 's back. Gregory was now the only remaining founding member; Cochran, Carl Rainge and Don Porter formed the rest of the band.

But after release of the first single in this formation Hudson returned and again took over the role of lead singer. In 1957 the debut album of the Spaniels titled Goodnight, It's Time to Go. End of the 50s there were further line-up changes, the band set in 1960 consisted of Hudson, Warren, Gregory, Andy McGruder and Bill Carey. The single I Know crest this year at least to # 23 of the R & B charts.

Shortly after Gregory and McGruder had left the Spaniels, the band 1961. 1969 separated it came to a reunion with Hudson, Charles Douglas, Alvin Wheeler, Alvin Lloyd and Pete Simmons. The latter was later replaced by Andrew Lawyer. 1974 made ​​the Spaniels their last recordings, however, remain and toured for example, oldies revival shows.
