La Tentation de Saint Antoine is a religious film from 1898 by Georges Méliès. In America, the film under the title The Temptation of St. Anthony was released.

Action

The monk Antony reads some verses from the Bible. Suddenly, out of nowhere appears a woman pulling at his beard. The monk begins to pray and the woman disappears. When he would turn to his book, he is suddenly ensnared by two ladies. With some gestures he makes them disappear again.

When he kisses a skull, he will by three ladies circled so that dance around him. They disappear again as he flees from her dance. He turns to his crucifix and begins to pray. When he looks back to Jesus - figure, he comes back against a woman. This time, his prayers were not unheard of. An angel appears and puts an end to the nightmare.

Background information

This is the first movie about the temptations of St. Anthony. Georges Méliès continued several times a the stop trick to make disappear the ladies again.
