The Tokens

The Tokens were an American doo-wop group.

The group found in 1955 at a high school in Brooklyn, New York under the name The Linc -Tones together. Among the founding members was Neil Sedaka, who left the vocal quartet in 1957, to become successful as a soloist. 1960 finally established the name The Tokens.

The big breakthrough came in the same year with The Lion Sleeps Tonight. The song was from the South African composer Solomon Linda (AKA: Mbube ) and was previously a hit in the U.S. folk scene. The Tokens sang it with a text by the composer George David Weiss. The first token of the interpreted version was recorded over the years more than 150 times by other groups.

By 1970, followed by several more minor hits in the U.S. charts. Then parted Henry Medress from the other three, which further made ​​together under the name Cross Country. In 1973, she could penetrate with the classic In The Midnight Hour by Wilson Pickett in the U.S. Top 40 again.
