The Town I Loved So Well

The Town I Loved So Well is a song by Irish musician Phil Coulter from 1973, which deals with the conflict in Northern Ireland.

The first three verses of the song deal with the simple but happy life as shown in the workers' districts of Derry in Northern Ireland, where the narrator spent his childhood. The last two verses deal with the bloody conflict between Protestants and Catholics in Derry. It is shown how the place previously described idyllic transformed into a civil war scene and the childhood familiar quiet streets are now lined with tanks of the army.

A well-known version of this song comes from the Irish band The Dubliners. Hannes Wader coverte this song under the title Small Town.
