The Virgin appearing to St. Bernard

The Vision of Saint Bernard ( Apparizione della Vergine a San Bernardo ) is a painting by the Italian painter Pietro Perugino and was built around 1493 and around 1489 in the High Renaissance. The sacred image, once an altarpiece, painted with oil colors on wood and is in the permanent collection of the Alte Pinakothek in Munich.

Mary and two angels appear to St. Bernard of Clairvaux. Maria and Bernhard, holding eye contact are flanked by two attendant figures: Maria of two angels standing on the ground and Bernhard Johannes (Evangelist ) and Bartholomew ( Apostle ). The full-length Maria faces as in a spectacle to the viewer. The screen layout is mirror symmetry. The middle image shows a mild, quiet countryside.

Bernhard is shown seated at his desk and raises his arms. The atmosphere seems very quiet.

The painting, purchased in 1829 by King Ludwig I, hangs in the Alte Pinakothek since it opened. It was at that time one of the main attractions was considered as the greatest painters of all time Perugino.
