Talvisota is a Finnish film about a company of the Finnish infantry regiment JR23 in the Winter War of November 30, 1939 until March 13, 1940. The film was the 50th anniversary of the outbreak of hostilities in the Finnish cinema.

Content

The film, an adaptation of the novel Winter War by Antti Tuuri, deals with the Finnish infantry regiment JR23, which consisted of men from Southern Ostrobothnia, but above all a column reservists from Kauhava.

Production and publication

Director Pekka Parikka put the fate of the fighting troops in the center. The main actors are the two brothers Martti and Paavo Hakala from the Finnish city of Kauhava, played by the actors Taneli Mäkelä and Konstan Mäkelä.

The produced 195 minutes long of National Filmi Oy film was until the release of the film Dark Floors in 2008, the Finnish so far most expensive film. The music composed Jukka Haavisto and Juha Tikka and for the cut Keijo Virtanen was responsible.

At the premiere in Finland on 30 November 1989, the film was released in Sweden in the cinemas. He has also appeared on videocassette and DVD, and among other things also in Estonia and France.

Awards

In 1990, the film at the Berlinale in 1990 was nominated for the Golden Bear. At the ceremony of the Finnish Film Awards Jussi Talvisota won the 1990 awards including for best actor ( Taneli Mäkelä ), Best Director ( Pekka Parikka ), Best Music ( Juha Tikka ) and Best Supporting Actor ( Vesa Vierikko ). Also in 1990 there was the Nordic Film Festival in Rouen an award in the category for Best Actor.

TV Series

The original film was recut for Finnish television to a five-part mini-series that was first aired in 1991. The series was supplemented with an hour of additional scenes that were reshot after the theatrical release of Pekka Parikka.
