Theagenes of Rhegium

Theagenes of Rhegium (Greek Θεαγένης ὁ Ῥηγῖνος ) was a Greek poet of the 6th century BC, from the city of Rhegium. According to a note in a Neo-Platonist Porphyry of the Iliad Scholion he is considered the founder of the allegorical exegesis of Homer. By metaphorical interpretation he sought the archaic, anthropomorphic gods of Homer to withdraw a neueinsetzenden rationalist- Enlightenment criticism. His works are lost.
