Theater Lübeck

Building

The theater was rebuilt in the Art Nouveau style in 1908 instead of an earlier building dating from 1859, the so-called casino theater, at Beckergrube 10-14 Old Town of Lübeck with donations of patron Emil Possehl by the Dresden architect Martin Duelfer as well as its local site manager Max Baudrexel. The reliefs in the main cornice of the sandstone facade is a work of the sculptor Georg Roemer. The midfield is Apollo and the nine muses represent each side comedy and tragedy. History

The bourgeois interest in drama and opera awoke in Lübeck was only in the wake of the Enlightenment. The first opera was performed on 2 June 1746 in the home of master carpenter Schröder corner of King Street / Wahmstraße.
