Thelocactus bicolor subsp. schwarzii

Thelocactus is a genus of flowering plants of the cactus family ( Cactaceae ). The botanical name of the genus comes from the Greek word " θηλή " ( thele ) for wart off and has resolved out in warts ribs of the species.

Description

Thelokakteen are flachkugelige to slightly columnar stem succulents of up to 25 (in some cases up to 40) cm high and 20 cm diameter. The plants usually remain unbranched, sometimes low basal branch or form rarely strong branching cushion. Your ribs are dissolved in nodular rounded at the bases edged warts. The standing on the protuberances areolae are elongated, round or longitudinally. The entsprießenden thorns them are often colorful (red, brown, yellow ), sometimes flattened or severely roughened and usually clearly divided into peripheral and central spines.

The funnel-shaped, scaly exterior flowers appear singly from recent areoles. The color of the bloom ranges from white through yellow and red to magenta and purple. After fertilization green or red fruits are formed, which dry at maturity, open basal and dismiss black, pear-shaped seeds.

Systematics and distribution

The distribution of the genus Thelocactus extends from Texas in the United States to central Mexico. Its distribution focus is the north of Mexico.

Karl Moritz Schumann presented Thelocactus 1898 as a subgenus of Echinocactus ( Echinocactus subg. Thelocactus ) on. Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose raised the subgenus 1922 in the rank of a genus. The type species of the genus Echinocactus is hexaedrophorus. The genus Thelocactus include the following types:
