Theodor Heinrich Engelbrecht

Thies Hinrich Engelbrecht ( born October 6, 1853 the court Obendeich at Gluckstadt (Schleswig -Holstein), † October 18, 1934 same place ) was a German geographer and agricultural farmer. He is regarded as one of the leading founders of the agricultural geography as a scientific discipline.

Journey

Engelbrecht comes from a long-established farming family. He attended from 1864 to 1873 the High School in Gluckstadt, graduated from an agricultural apprenticeship and then studied economics at the Universities of Leipzig and Strasbourg. In his mind, he was strongly influenced by the writings of Johann Heinrich von Thünen.

1880 Engelbrecht decided to emigrate to the USA. He bought a farm in Iowa and learned extensive travels know American agriculture. In 1885 he returned to Germany and took over his father's farm in Herzhorn. At the same time he was active in agricultural associations in local authorities and in politics. As a free- conservative MP, he was from 1895 to 1914 a member of the Prussian House of Representatives and of 27 January 1914 to 1918 in the Prussian mansion. After 1918 he devoted himself almost exclusively to his farm and his private studies. His adopted son ( great-nephew ), Ernst Engelbrecht -Greve ( 1916-1990 ) was from 1962 to 1975 Minister of Food, Agriculture and Forestry of Schleswig- Holstein.

Research activities

Since 1890, Engelbrecht was intensely occupied with scientific issues in the field of agricultural geography. His research focus was the regional distribution of agricultural crops and domestic animals. He wrote numerous treatises and published extensive cartographic works that influenced the further development of agricultural geography prevail. From 1900 to 1933 he was a member of the Presidium of the German Agricultural Society. In 1906, he founded this company in a " Special Committee on Climate and Meteorology ", which he chaired until 1933.

Hardly anyone had been the border area between land economics and geography as intensely processed as Thies Hinrich Engelbrecht. He is regarded as the doyen of agricultural geography in Germany. His scientific achievements found in the professional world highest recognition. The University of Breslau (1911 ), the University of Kiel (1921) and the Agricultural University of Berlin ( 1923) awarded him an honorary doctorate. On the occasion of his 70th birthday (1923 ), friends presented a bibliophile designed commemorative with a selection of his own posts and a complete list of his published writings until then.
