Theodor von Brand

Theodor von Brand ( born September 22, 1899 in Ortenberg (Baden ); † July 19, 1978 in Bethesda ( Maryland)), full name Theodor Kurt Freiherr von fire to Neidenstein, was a German - American parasitologist.

Life and work

Theodore of fire comes from the noble family of fire to Neidenstein. He studied zoology and medicine, where he received his doctorate in both subjects. He was an assistant at Ernst wine country at the University of Erlangen and went in 1929 to the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Hamburg (Bernhard -Nocht- Institute for Tropical Medicine ) as an assistant in the Department of Protozoology. In 1933 he had to leave the Institute because he had Jewish ancestors. He went on Copenhagen in 1935 in the United States. At Johns Hopkins University he performed on parasites as one of the first biochemical studies. From 1947 he was head of department at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda (Maryland).

He founded the biochemistry and the study of the metabolism of parasites from the group of helminths and protozoa.

In 1978 he received the Robert Koch Medal.

His son Theodore P. of Fire (1926-2004) was a respected labor lawyers in the United States.
