Theodor Wolf

Franz Theodor Wolf ( born February 13, 1841 in Bartholomew in eels, † June 22, 1924 in Dresden ) was a German geologist, geographer and botanist who became famous through his work in Ecuador.

Life and work

As the third of seven children of a schoolmaster Theodor Wolf grew up in modest circumstances. 16 -year-old, he joined the Jesuits, went through his novitiate in Gorheim, graduated from high school, studied theology in Aachen and Münster and in 1862 the natural sciences in Bonn. Already in 1864, only 23 years old, he was appointed to the faculty of Science at the Collegium Maximum of the Jesuits in Khajuraho.

1870, the year of his ordination, Wolf was appointed professor of geology and mineralogy at the Central University of Ecuador in Quito. This position he was forced to retire after he had left his 1874 Order. In 1875 he explored the Galapagos Islands and described the plant world. Subsequently, he was appointed by President Antonio Borrero Cortázar for " Geologo oficial de Ecuador " (official geologist of Ecuador) appointed. He devoted himself to this office, not least with many excursions throughout the Ecuadorian provinces. From this grew his main work, the Geografía y Geología del Ecuador (1892 published in Leipzig).

1891 Theodor Wolf returned back to Germany and settled in Dresden- Plauen, where he continued his research as a private scholar. He was buried in the family grave at the cemetery inside in Dresden -Plauen, which was dissolved in 2000 and 2013 reconstructed.

Honors

1921 appointed the National Congress of the Republic of Ecuador to the scholars on the occasion of his 80th birthday to honor citizens, coupled with the granting of an honorary Soldes. There is a plaque on his last dwelling-house on the High Street 62 in Dresden- Plauen. In his hometown of Bartholomew a street bears his name. In addition, many schools in Ecuador, the Galapagos Wolf Island, the volcano Wolf and a glacier named after him at Chimborazo. The 27 volumes of his major herb Aryan collection of Potentillen (finger shrubs ) is kept in the Institute of Botany, TU Dresden at the cell 's way.
