Theophanes Continuatus

Theophanes Continuatus ( continuator of Theophanes, medium Greek Συνέχεια Θεοφάνη; Οἱ μετὰ Θεοφάνην; Latin: Scriptores post Theophanem or Continuatio Theophanis ) is the name for a collection of imperial biographies of the Byzantine Empire, in a manuscript from the 11th century ( Cod Vat Gr. 167) is obtained. The historical work was commissioned by the emperor Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus and contains the biographies of the Byzantine emperors from the time of 813 to 961

Theophanes Continuatus is written by several authors continuation of 285-813 reaching World Chronicle of Theophanes Homologetes, with the style but clearly differs from Theophanes (see also Macedonian Renaissance ). The first four books include biographies of Emperor Leo V the Armenian to Michael III. , But the anonymous author deviates from the strict annalistic principle of Theophanes. The fifth book contains a written by Emperor Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus biography of his grandfather Basil I, called the Vita Basilii. The sixth book may have been co-authored by Theodoros Daphnopates († about 963). It includes brief biographical representations of the Emperor Leo VI. , Alexander, Constantine VII, Romanus I Lakapenos and Romanos II. Chronicle is an official historiography of the Macedonian imperial family.
