Theretra capensis is a butterfly (moth ) from the family of moth ( Sphingidae ).

Features

The moths have a forewing length from 38 to 50 millimeters. Their coloration is highly variable. The body and forewings are pale green, pale greyish or pale yellowish brown, with traces of a darker drawing, which may be more pronounced in some individuals. The hind wings are pink with green pattern. The sensor and the front legs are yellow to orange.

The caterpillars are green, blue-green, yellowish brown or reddish pink. Your body is relatively thick. On the back a broad blue-green longitudinal band which is mottled yellow and white and includes a purple center line runs. The body sides are bluish green with an indistinct oblique lateral stripe running from the fourth or fifth segment to Analhorn. This is very short, strong, curved downward and purple. On the third segment is an oval eye patch, which is slightly raised. He is white and has a purple core. The front legs are dark red. The pink color variant of the caterpillar has a yellow side stripes.

Distribution and habitat

The species is distributed from the Cape of Good Hope to Kenya and quite often. They inhabited forests.

Way of life

Theretra capensis flies usually at dusk, but can also be in the morning or in the afternoon when the sun still seems to be observed. The caterpillars feed on grapevines ( Vitis ), Cissus, Rhoicissus and Ampelopsis.
