Thianthrene is a sulfur-containing heterocyclic compound. It is the sulfur analogue of dibenzodioxin. Unlike thianthrene that is not planar, but has an angle of 128 ° between the planes of the two benzene ring sub- structures.
Representation
Thianthrene can be represented by the reaction of sulfur monochloride with benzene in the presence of aluminum chloride.
History
Synthesis of thianthrene succeeded for the first time John Stenhouse. Thianthrene reacts with sulfuric acid to give a red product. R. Wizinger published the structure of the cation responsible for the color in 1929. Four studies on the structure of thianthrene radical cation have been published independently.
