Thibaud of Ostia

Theobald or Thibaud (* in France, † November 4, 1188 in Rome) was a French Benedictine ( Cluniac ) and cardinal.

In 1169 he is shown as prior of Saint- Aroul in Crespy in Valois. At this time he was sent to Constantinople in religious matters Opel. After his return he was elected abbot of Cluny in 1180 and General of the Cluniac order. Four years later he was appointed Pope Lucius III. Cardinal Bishop of Ostia e Velletri; he soon had to give up the abbey. He signed papal privileges of May 21 between 1184 and October 29, 1188. IN the beginning of 1187, he served as papal legate in Austria, where he consecrated the monastery of the Holy Cross.

After the death of Gregory VIII on December 17, 1187 Theobald was elected Pope, but did not participate in this election. Pope Clement III. wanted to send him in the fall of 1188 as legate to England to settle the dispute between the Archbishop of Canterbury and the monks of Christchurch. However, Theobald could not fulfill this mission, because he died in Rome on November 4, 1188 already. He was buried in the basilica of S. Paolo fuori le mura.
