Thibaudeau Rinfret

Thibaudeau Rinfret, PC ( born June 22, 1879 in Montreal, † July 25, 1962 ) was a Canadian judge. He was a member from 1924 to 1954 the Supreme Court of Canada, and was its chairman from 1944 ( Chief Justice ).

Biography

Rinfret was educated at the Collège Sainte -Marie in Montreal, and then studied law at the Université Laval and McGill University. He completed his studies in 1900 and received approval in the following year as a lawyer. By 1910, he practiced in Saint- Jérôme, then in Montreal in the firm Taschereau, Rinfret, Vallée & Genest. He also was a lecturer in commercial law at McGill University.

From 1922 Rinfret served on the Supreme Court of the Province of Quebec. Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King appointed him on October 1, 1924 Supreme Court of Canada. On 8 January 1944, the appointment would come to the Chief Justice. In all cases the Supreme Court had in 1944 the highest authority; previously were civil appeals additionally be submitted to the Judicial Committee of the British Privy Council.

Since after the resignation of Governor-General Lord Alexander passed in January 1952 month until a successor is appointed, Rinfret took during this time also the office of Acting Governor-General and thus represented the head of state.

Rinfret resigned on 22 June 1954 after nearly 30 years in office. His younger brother Fernand Rinfret was Liberal deputy of the lower house and the mayor of Montreal.
