Thiemo

Thiemo of Salzburg, also Diemo, Ditmar, Tyemo or Theodemar (* around 1040 in Bavaria; † 1101 or 1102) was a Roman Catholic Archbishop of Salzburg, who is revered as Seliger.

Life

Thiemo as the son of Count II Thiemo the dynasty of the Counts of Formbach (Landkreis Passau). He became a Benedictine monk in Niederaltaich and was a gifted painter and sculptor. 1077 he became abbot of St. Peter in Salzburg, where he stood in the Investiture Controversy on the side of the Pope. The loyal to the emperor against Archbishop Berthold expelled him in 1081 in Salzburg. Thiemo afterwards lived in the monasteries Hirsau and Schaffhausen in Mönchsdeggingen. In 1084 he was able to return to Salzburg for a short time, but soon retired in Admont Monastery. 1086 Thiemo could return to Salzburg with the loyal to the Pope Archbishop Gebhard. After the death of Gebhard he was elected on March 25, 1090 to the Archbishop of Salzburg and consecrated bishop on 7 April. From Pope Urban II, the pallium, which thus confirmed him as archbishop received. Thiemo reformed the monastery Admont 1095 and took part in the synod of Piacenza. In 1097 he was defeated in the Battle of Berthold village hall and for several years was held prisoner until a monk helped him to escape. He was never canonized, worshiped in Salzburg and the Benedictine monasteries Niederaltaich and Admont but soon after his death. His feast day is September 28. It is represented with an intestinal spindle.
