Thierbach Power Station

The power plant Thierenbach is a partially built back lignite power plant in the mining area south of Leipzig. The facility is located about 20 km south of Leipzig, at the hall of the municipality Kitzscher (Landkreis Leipzig) at an altitude of 138.5 m above sea level.

History

The decision to build the power plant was taken in 1964. The foundation for the power plant was laid in 1967, on 3 September 1969 of the grid circuit of the first 210 MW block. As of May 1971, there were all four 210 MW units at the net. The power plant was operated with Soviet technology in the construction of technicians and specialists from the Soviet Union, Poland and Hungary were involved. The chimney was at a height of 300 meters one of the highest in the world.

Following the restructuring of the Central German lignite and energy, the plant was shut down and dismantled gradually on 30 September 1999. On 19 October 2002, the 300 m high chimney was blown up on 24 March 2006 also saw the demolition of the cooling towers.
