Thietmar of Minden

Thietmar (also Thiemo, now called Dietmar von Minden, Bavaria *, † March 5, 1206 in Minden ) was bishop of Minden from 1185 to 1206.

The name Thietmar (today: Dietmar ) comes from the Old High German and means The Famous among the people.

On March 21, 1189, Emperor Henry VI, at that time still king, bishop Dietmar von Minden the right to at Dehem. (Now Dehme district of the city of Bad Oeynhausen ) and Cruckeberge (now district Krückeberg the city Hessian Oldendorf ) exploit discovered silver deposits.

In 1200 Thietmar inaugurates the monastery Marienwerderstraße.

Thietmar is venerated as a saint.

He is considered one of the greatest bishops of Westphalia.

His feast day is day of his death, March 5.

Holy legend

About Thietmar is narrated that he wanted to fast on bread and water on a Good Friday, as it was usual with him, although he was physically very weak. The water that had drawn his servant out of the well, however, was now become wine. Thietmar dismissed the potion and again asked for water.

When he got over and over re-purposed wine, he began to distrust the servant. Finally, he accompanied him to the fountain, watching exactly how this drew the water. When he noticed how the water was turned into wine, he thanked God that this had strengthened him despite his unworthiness with this wonderful drink.
