Thikse Monastery

Thiksey (also Thiksey, Tikse or Tiksey ) is a Buddhist temple ( Gompa ) and monastery, which is located about 18 km from the district capital Leh in the north-western Indian mountainous region of Ladakh.

The monastery is situated in almost 3300 meters above sea level on a hill in the upper Indus. It was founded in the early 15th century. His (currently around 70) monks belonging to the Buddhist Gelugpa ( Gelbhut ) to Order. The monastery complex covers more than 12 steps or terraces up the hill. It includes among other 10 temples. In one of them there is a 15 m high gold-plated statue of Buddha. Another temple dedicated to the goddess Dorje Chenmo. In the monastery, there are also a number of sacred shrines and a collection of historic thangkas ( scroll paintings ) and other historical works of art.
