Thin-film diode

A thin film diode (English thin- film diode, TFD short ) is a diode which is manufactured by thin film technology.

Application

Thin film diodes are used especially in liquid crystal displays, in particular in matrix LCDs. This type is also known as TFD display and is mainly used in mobile devices such as mobile phones, as an alternative to TFT displays are used.

The advantages of two-pole thin film diodes over three-pin thin-film transistors are mainly due to lower power consumption and lower production costs due to simpler construction. The disadvantages include a narrower color gamut, which can be countered, however, by using a "dual select" diode array used instead of two diodes per pixel circuit.
