Thingeyri

Þingeyri is a part of the municipality Ísafjarðarbær settlement with 330 inhabitants in the region in the extreme northwest Westfjords of Iceland.

Geography

The town lies on Dýrafjörður on a sandbank. The 367 m high mountain Sandafell above the village and 998 m high Kaldbakur are the major hiking areas in the north- west of Iceland.

The two valleys Meðaldalur and Haukadalur lie west of Þingeyri. Southeast is the Brekkudalur.

History

The place is the oldest trading center in the district Vestur - Isafjardarsysla. Here American fishermen had their base in the late 18th century. The warehouse from 1733 is one of the oldest buildings in Iceland. In 1996, the congregation was united with five other municipalities to Ísafjarðarbær.

Attractions

The Þingeyrarkirkja was built in the years 1910 to 1911. An old blacksmith, came from 1913, can be visited.

Economy

Major lines of business of the population are fishing, dried fish production and tourism. In the village there are two fish factories.

Transport and Infrastructure

Across the street No. 60, the Vestfjarðarvegur, the place is connected to the ring road. The village has a harbor. The road connects 622 Þingeyri with the Meðaldalur and the Haukadalur.
