Thiodiglycol or bis (2-hydroxyethyl ) sulphide is a precursor in the production of mustard gas (lost ). By heating with thionyl chloride in benzene solution, the bis (2- hydroxyethyl) sulfide is chlorinated to Lost.
Under the synonymous name 2,2 '- thiodiethanol thiodiglycol is used as an embedding medium in light microscopy. Since it is miscible with water, the refractive index can be adjusted continuously between that of water (1.33 ) and the immersion oil (1.52 ).
