Third Ear Band

The Third Ear Band was a British music group that existed intermittently from 1967 to 1993. It is sometimes attributed to the progressive rock, although she was not typical with no electric instruments, but with violin, oboe and cello for rock music. Their music consisted of experimental improvisation with influences from Far Eastern Raga and European folk.

Band History

The Third Ear Band was founded by the jazz drummer Glen Sweeney, formerly a partner of Dave Tomlin in the avant-garde group "The Giant Sun Trolley " ( 1966-67 ), one of the regulars bands of the UFO clubs, and the drummer for the short-lived band "Hydrogen jukebox " (1967).

Their first recordings were published in 1969 under the pseudonym "The National Balkan Ensemble". In 1969 she released her first album under his own name Alchemy. On 7 June 1969 she opened the concert by Blind Faith in Hyde Park, on July 5, 1969 she played at the legendary Rolling Stones concert at the same place. On 31 August 1969 she had a second appearance at the Isle of Wight Festival.

Gained popularity, the band primarily by their soundtracks for two films, Abelard and Heloise (1970 ) and especially Roman Polanski's Macbeth (1971, album released 1972). In 1973, the band broke up and only came in the late 1980s together again. It appeared a few more albums before 1993 after a heart attack Sweeneys came the final end.
