Tholey Abbey

The Abbey Tholey Tholey in Saarland is a Benedictine monastery and belongs to the Beuronese Congregation. The abbey church is under the patronage of St. Maurice.

History

Already in the 5th and 6th centuries after Christ had come together on the ruins of a Roman Baderanlage a cleric community. Under the direction of Magne Rich, 566-600 Bishop of Trier, the hermits came together to monastic communities. One such first community at the foot of Mount foam should Wendelin have projected. Legend has it that Wendelin said to have been the first abbot of Tholey.

The Benedictine life began in Tholey probably around 750 end of the 15th century occurred in the Abbey of Bursfeld Congregation. The Valentinuskapelle in Wiesbach was a stronghold of the monastery. 1794 the monastery was plundered by French revolutionary troops and burned and removed in the same year. 1798 were auctioned off the building, in 1806 they were as a parish church and parsonage owned by the municipality.

The abbey was founded in 1949 by Pope Pius XII. canonically rebuilt and inhabited in 1950 by monks from the Benedictine Abbey of St. Matthias in Trier. The renovation of the church was initiated at the time of Abbot Dr. Peter Borne. During this time, Father Maurus founded Sabel (1912-2012) the Tholeyer Boys Choir (1950-1978), a nationally acclaimed boys' choir. Today, the monks work in pastoral care and operate an inn and a guesthouse.

In 2008, the abbey was on the verge of closing. Through the sale of approximately 80 acres of land to the community Tholey and support from the Patrons comprehensive around 200 members, the abbey was economically consolidate and take construction and renovation projects in attack. Among other things, created a new greenhouse and an apiary. 2013 live 12 monks in the abbey.

Organ

In 1960 the company built Oberlinger / Windesheim the present organ in the abbey church behind the historic brochure by Roman Benedict Nollet. It has 42 stops on three manuals and pedal. The key action is mechanical, the electrical stop action. The instrument has the following disposition:
