Thomas Bradwardine

Thomas Bradwardine (also Bradwardinus, Bradwardina, called by his contemporaries doctor profundus ) (* 1290 in Chichester or Hartfield, Sussex; † August 26, 1349 in London ) was an English mathematician, philosopher and theologian, and one of the Oxford Calculators.

Thomas Bradwardine studied at Merton College and Balliol College, Oxford University. In the years 1325 and 1327 he held the office of the procurator of the university. 1337 was Thomas Bradwardine Chancellor of St Paul's Cathedral in London. From 1339 he accompanied Edward III. confessor on his campaigns in France. A few weeks before his death in 1349 Bradwardine was elected Archbishop of Canterbury and consecrated in Avignon. Of particular importance are his investigations of free fall. He suspected long before Galileo Galilei, that all bodies fall at the same speed in a vacuum.
