Thomas Cooper (representative)

Thomas Cooper ( * 1764 in Little Creek Hundred, Sussex County, Delaware; † July 1, 1829 in Georgetown, Delaware ) was an American politician. Between 1813 and 1817 he represented the State of Delaware in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Thomas Cooper was the older brother of William B. Cooper, who was 1841-1845 Governor of Delaware. The exact date of birth of Thomas Cooper is unknown. He attended primary school of his home and became a member of the Federalist Party. Between 1803 and 1808 he was a delegate in the House of Representatives from Delaware. In the meantime he studied law. Since his admission to the bar in 1805, he worked as such in addition to his political activities for the rest of his life in Georgetown. Between 1808 and 1811 Thomas Cooper was a member of the Senate from Delaware.

For the congressional elections of 1812 Delaware a second seat in the U.S. House of Representatives was granted for the first time. But this seat could keep just ten years until 1823 the State. The elections took place ("at large" ) in the entire state of Delaware. Here, Thomas Cooper was elected to Congress. After a re-election in 1814 he was able to exercise his mandate between 4 March 1813 to 3 March 1817. After the end of his time in Congress, Cooper moved back out of politics and practiced law in Georgetown, where he died in 1829. He was buried in the family grave of Coopers near Laurel.
