Thomas E. Stewart

Thomas Elliott Stewart ( born September 22, 1824 in New York City; † January 9, 1904 ) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1867 and 1869 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Thomas Elliott Stewart was born in New York City and grew up there. He completed his preparatory studies and then studied law. His admission to the bar he received in 1847 and then began practicing in New York City. In 1854 he was a member of the Education Committee. He sat in the years 1865 and 1866 in the New York State Assembly. Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party. Between 1866 and 1868 he was a member of the Republican State Committee.

In the congressional elections of 1866, Stewart was a conservative Republican in the sixth electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Henry J. Raymond on March 4, 1867. Since he gave up for reelection two years later, he retired after the March 3, 1869 out of the Congress.

He then returned to New York City, where he pursued his activities as a lawyer again. In 1872 he presided over the Liberal Republican General Committee in New York City. Between 1874 and 1876 he worked as a park commissioner in New York City. He died on March 9, 1904 in New York City and was then buried in the Center Cemetery in New Milford (Connecticut).
