Thomas Finnegan

Thomas Anthony Finnegan ( born August 26, 1925 in Castlerea, County Roscommon, † December 25, 2011 in Sligo, County Sligo) was Roman Catholic Bishop of Killala.

Life

Tom Finnegan received on 17 June 1951, the ordination. He was now curate and served in the 1970s as President of Summerhill College, Sligo. In 1982 he became parish priest ( parish priest ) in Roscommon. In 1985 he became vicar general of the diocese of Elphin.

Pope John Paul II appointed him on May 3, 1987 Bishop of Killala. He received his episcopal consecration of the Apostolic Nuncio to Ireland, Gaetano Alibrandi, on 12 July of the same year; Co-consecrators were Joseph Cunnane, Archbishop of Tuam, and his predecessor in Killala, Thomas McDonnell. Finnegan was a member of the Commission for Education, emigration and catechism. He engaged in particular for migrants and Catholic social teaching. He was a member of the Liaison Committee of the Bishops Conferences of Ireland, England, Wales and Scotland. On 19 February 2002 John Paul II accepted his resignation due to age.

After his resignation, he founded the Newman Institute in Ballina. Finnegan died in December 2011 after a long illness at the age of 86 years in Sligo General Hospital.
