Thomas Fitch (politician)

Thomas Fitch ( born January 27, 1838 in New York City; † November 12, 1923 in Decoto, California ) was an American politician. Between 1869 and 1871 he represented the state of Nevada in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Early years

Thomas Fitch attended the public schools of his home in New York. In 1855 he first moved to Chicago and a year later to Milwaukee. He was from 1859 to 1860 editor of the newspaper " Milwaukee Free Democrat ". 1860 Fitch moved to California, where he edited the newspaper " San Francisco Times " and " Placerville Republican ". After studying law, he began in California to work in his new profession.

Political career

Fitch was a member of the Republican Party. Between 1862 and 1863 he was a delegate in the House of Representatives from California. In June 1863 he moved to the Nevada Territory. There he was a member of the 1864 Constituent Assembly of the State of Nevada in the year incurred. In the years 1865 and 1866 he was district attorney in Washoe County. In the congressional elections of 1868 Fitch was elected as the successor of Delos R. Ashley in the U.S. House of Representatives. There he completed between March 4, 1869 March 3, 1871 was a parliamentary term. In the following midterm elections he was defeated Charles West Kendall, the candidate of the Democratic Party.

After the end of his time in Congress Fitch again worked as a lawyer. In 1909, he moved to Los Angeles. There he wrote, among other newspaper articles. Thomas Fitch died in November 1923 in Decoto, which now belongs to the city of Union City.
