Thomas Gordon (psychologist)

Thomas Gordon ( born March 11, 1918 † 26 August 2002) was a practicing psychologist in the United States. He earned his doctorate at the University of Chicago, where he also taught. Through his experience in working with children and young people, he recognized the importance of communication and nonviolent conflict resolution for the interpersonal relationship.

Based on scientific principles and humanistic psychology of Carl Rogers, he developed a concrete, applicable in everyday life model, which is also known as the Gordon model. Thomas Gordon is one of the pioneers of humanistic psychology and believes that people who grow up in a caring and liberal climate, to a large extent be able to take responsibility and to lead independent, fulfilling lives.

He is the author of several books on communication, education and relationships. His most well known book family conference was sold millions of copies worldwide. To facilitate the application of his methods interested persons, he had already developed in the 60s several specific training courses for parents, educators, managers, etc. For his work Thomas Gordon has won several awards. Objective of his method, improving relationships and non-violence, resolve conflicts without losers, is also work for peace in the true sense.

He was three times nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997, 1998 and 1999.
